Bringing the mountain to Mohammed Part II

James from the Teen Tech Squad and I did another Scratch session at the Zanewood Recreation Center during their after school programming time. Like our last visit, we were given space to set our 6 laptops up in the gaming room where there's a Wii, pool tables, a huge TV and a very loud radio. There were fewer kids at Zanewood overall than there were last month. The staff attributed this to 1)nicer weather and 2)students spending more time finishing up big end-of-year projects. Regardless, all 6… Continue

Teen Tech Squad Road Show: Sumner

The Brooklyn Park Library's Teen Tech Squad went on the road to lead a workshop at Sumner Library in Minneapolis last week. None of us had ever visited this library before so it was kind of cool to see a completely different building in a completely different community.

The workshop took place in a meeting room in the basement of this split-level library. After a rocky start with various technology mishaps, the youth instructors launched into their workshop presentation with…

Workshop at Brooklyn Park HCL

Link to projects gallery Alicia and I held a two-part workshop this week at Brooklyn Park Library aimed at kids entering 5th and 6th grade. Two members from the Teen Tech Squad (teens employed by the library to teach technology programs) did the bulk of the instruction with assists from Alicia and me from time to time. We had 9 kids in the workshop, and our stated goal was to have the kids animate a character that they… Continue

Scratch Cards Expansion Pack

Does anyone out there use Scratch cards? Do you find them helpful? Are there functions that you wish were diagrammed on Scratch cards, but that currently aren't? Alicia, Keith, Jen and I talked about Scratch cards yesterday and how we'd like to see more complex Scratch cards for the people who already know the basics. We talked about having different levels of cards (the existing set is for newbies, there might be a set for intermediates and another set for the experts.) We also talked about… Continue
