Scratch Activity/Lesson/Let Template

Hi All,

Up in MN we're working with a designer to create a universal template that will assist session leaders, developers, helpers, AND Scratchers in development and dissemination of the work we are doing with Scratch. Our hope is that designer, Roger Barrett will create and incorporate some kind of visual language to connect all of our Lessons/Scratchlets/Activity Handouts/Pedagogy Tips, Plus more+! I've invited Roger to join us on the Media Mashup ning and he will be looking… Continue

MacArthur Foundation on Digital Media learning

Here's a nice presentation about the importance of digital content creation for youth. Nichole Pinkard talks about her work at Youmedia (Chicago Public). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUfHZu54W8c

Turkey Hunt and Rambling

This past week we had a two-part workshop. Most of the kids in Wilmette were off school for the whole week before Thanksgiving, so we had a full class with a waiting list. Unfortunately, the high school students were in school, so I didn't have a teen volunteer to help out.

Our project was making a Turkey Hunt game (see my last post for the project). I think the project is cool, and in general the kids liked it. But I have to say it was a little long and challenging for this group,… Continue

Turkey Hunt

Just in time for Thanksgiving...a turkey hunt game! It's from a two-part program that's still in progress, but I just sent the game and the directions to Sabrina to post, in case anyone needs a pre-Thanksgiving project. It's posted here.

The game is a simplified version of Duck Hunt. And if you're a vegetarian, you can think of it as Tofurkey Hunt.

Congratulations to Cynthia and Jason

Both Cynthia and Jason have been selected by ALA to participate in an Emerging Leaders program during 2010. I'm not at all surprised and totally excited for both. If they represent the future of libraries, we're in excellent hands!

Scratch handouts

I've shared some random Scratch handouts on Google Docs; feel free to use them if you think they're any good. I have several additional handouts (I've been calling them "Scratchlets") to share, but here's the issue: After running/supportng a Robocode tournament last summer my Toshiba died & now needs a new motherboard (or at least needs repair to the motherboard). So most of my stuff is trapped on a machine that won't boot up. I'll be adding more of these Scratchlets as I recover them. -… Continue

Ricarose Roque visit with the Wilmette Game Design Club

Ricarose visited with a group of about 14 of our Game Design Club members this evening. We put out some pizza and snacks and had an informal Q & A (which also included RR's new husband, Brian Keegan, who is doing his Ph.D at Northwestern in Media Studies).

Following this dialogue Ricarose gave us a Starlogo TNG demonstration, with the kids following along on laptops. This was a great opportunity for some of our more engaged and active members, and I only regret that none of our… Continue
